Best summer workouts to try with your best friend

With summer and bikini season in full swing, joining a health club with your bestie might be the first idea that comes to mind. Don't get us wrong — hitting the gym is a fantastic way of getting fit, but executing the same ol’ exercise routine can become redundant and a little boring.

We've come up with some alternative ways to ramp up your fitness levels without having to hit the usual treadmill. So grab your bestie and get ready to sweat.

Take a hike

Get some fresh air, take in nature's scenery and work those leg muscles. There's something about accomplishing a long hike that makes it so much more enjoyable than spending time at the gym. Like the idea of hiking, but don’t know where to start? Try downloading the AllTrails app which allows you to search over 50,000 trails with reviews and photos submitted by actual hikers — then get started on your adventures!

Practice yoga outdoors

Literally Google “outdoor yoga *insert city here*” and you’re bound to find free outdoor yoga classes in your own city. There’s nothing quite like taking your downward dogs and tree poses from the studio to your favorite beach or park. Sign up for an out-of-the-ordinary class

Put yourself and your bestie to the ultimate challenge and try something completely new. Want to overcome your small fear of heights? Try beginner courses in flying trapeze or other aerial arts, like aerial silk or rope classes. Want to bring out the kid in you — and still put in a workout? Join a rock climbing gym

Rock climbing gyms are all the rage right now and it’s understandable. Not only is it a great way to work out physically and mentally, as it takes a bit of problem-solving to master a route, but it’s also a fantastic way to meet new people. Try places like Brooklyn Boulders or The Cliffs in DUMBO if you’re in the New York City area. Hangar 18 also has a few locations in Southern California for first-timers and veteran climbers.
