Skincare can be one of those elusive practices that can seem mysterious and difficult. Should we wash often or not at all? Do we cleanse with oils or soap? With all the products out there, it’s hard to know what to choose. We turned to our friend Julie, a skincare professional, to help us with all of our burning skincare questions!
What's your name?
Julie but most people call me Jules.

What are ingredients people should avoid?
This is a very complex question because it really depends on your skin type. In general, I would suggest avoiding high pH cleansers, synthetic or artificial fragrances or colorants and drying alcohols (some alcohols are good for the skin so understanding ingredients are very important). Those with sensitive skin, rosacea, or dermatitis should avoid essential oils. Avoid washing your face with hot water.
What is a good basic skincare routine?
A basic skincare routine can look very different for different skin types. Those with dry skin would most likely use a dense moisturizer while those with oily skin might use a lightweight gel moisturizer. Once you figure out your skin type, then you can start to build an effective routine. For the most basic routine, you should cleanse (double cleanse at night to remove makeup), tone, use an essence/serum/ampoule to tackle specific skincare concerns and finish off your routine with a moisturizer. A moisturizer could be a gel, a lotion, cream or an oil. Lastly, you should apply a sunscreen all over the face, neck & ears.
What are your tips for dry skin in the winter?
I suggest using lots of hydrating layers. I also like to use a hydrating mist in between layers for extra hydration. I also suggest using a heavier cream or finishing off your routine with an oil or sleeping mask to help seal in moisture.
Anti-aging tips/products?
Retinoids are my favorite anti-aging products that help to combat all signs of aging. However, retinoids are often very hard to tolerate. They can irritate the skin, cause flaking, redness, and sensitivity. I have sensitive skin but I still use a retinoid 1-2x per week. To help combat irritation, I will mix it with my moisturizer or use it toward the end of my skincare routine. Using a retinoid this way creates a buffer which decreases what people call "tret" face. This will lessen the efficacy of the product but you are still getting anti-aging benefits.
Favorite products for cleansing & moisturizing?
Oooo this is a hard question! I am currently using the Drunk Elephant Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser and it's fabulous. For moisturizing, I have been loving the La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 because it's so soothing and helps repair the skin.
Holy grail product?
I have 2. First, I absolutely love the Avene Thermal Water! It is extremely hydrating and calming plus it's a fine mist so you can use it over makeup to hydrate and refresh your skin. Second HG product is probably the Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micellar Water. This stuff is amazing! Even when my skin is extremely irritated and anything I put on it burns, this cleansing water gently cleanses and instantly soothes and calms my skin. This is a great cleanser for traveling because you don't need to rinse.
Favorite makeup line?
I don't often wear makeup but I have been really enjoying One Over One's Lip Oil and Glossier's Cloud Paints on my cheeks. For base makeup, my philosophy is that foundation should offer skincare benefits. I love Korean cushion foundations because they not only offer coverage, but they also provide additional sunscreen protection and beneficial skincare ingredients. Current favorite is the Sulwhasoo Perfecting Cushion in No. 13.
How often should we be getting facials?
This will depend on your skincare concerns and what type of facial you are receiving. For example, those who get microdermabrasion or IPL treatments need to go on a consistent basis.
Common myths and misconceptions about skincare?
My favorite skincare myth is that eating chocolate causes acne.
Favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is to see clients making progress toward their skincare goals. It is the best feeling in the world.
Truth time! Do you watch those pimple popping videos? We certainly do!
I do too! There is just something about it that draws you in LOL.
Anything else you'd like to add? We're all ears!
Skincare products are not a one size fits all! A product that works for someone else might not work for you. It takes time building a routine that is tailored and customized to your particular skin type and skin concerns. It takes patience and consistency. You also need to know when it is time to see a doctor or dermatologist. Sometimes seeing a professional is the best thing you can do for your skin.
My philosophy is that beauty starts from within. I take a whole body, holistic approach to skincare. Eating a well-balanced diet, getting enough sleep, moderate exercise, and managing your stress all help promote healthy skin.
